Chapter 5 icon - The Gospel Road

Consider the two different sides that are influencing your decisions

THROUGHOUT the course of our lives, various forces are influencing us to make decisions. We inherit tendencies from our parents and prior generations to do good or to sin against God. The environment we were raised in and the friends we associate with have a great influence on us. Lucifer and the evil angels that are under his control have the ability to influence us to sin against God through various temptations, but they do not have the power to force us to do wrong. The Holy Spirit and God’s angels influence us to follow the holy law of God, but they will never force us to do right. God has given us the power of choice – if we want to love and serve God, we will need to make the decision to follow Him completely. If you would like to decide to follow God today, ask Him to give you the strength and power to make this life-changing decision. 75

God has placed the principles of His holy law in our minds so that we will know what is right and wrong – He initially gives each of us a conscience. Let us now ask God for His wisdom and understanding as we respectfully read and understand the holy law of God for ourselves. 76
The Two Foundations of God’s Holy Law
- 1 -
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
- 2 -
Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
Excerpted from: Matthew 22:37-40
The Ten Commandments of God’s Holy Law
- 1 -
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- 2 -
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
- 3 -
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
- 4 -
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
- 5 -
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
- 6 -
Thou shalt not kill.
- 7 -
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- 8 -
Thou shalt not steal.
- 9 -
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
- 10 -
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Exodus 20:3-17
Your love for God increases when you begin to realize how much He has loved you even when you were breaking His law and doing things that hurt Him and His people. God the Father allowed Jesus to come to Earth to be persecuted and suffer the death that you deserve so that you might have eternal life. This level of love is above our comprehension – would you allow your innocent son to be persecuted and die so that people who hate you might have the opportunity to live? This is a key difference between the message of the gospel and the message of false religions – you are instructed to love those who hate you and persecute you because this is the character of your Heavenly Father and you are His child. 77
When you obey God’s law you are revealing to the universe that you love God and want to follow Him because He has created you, saved you and loves you as His child. God has told us that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments – this will be the sign of your love and appreciation for His character and wisdom. And yet, without God’s powerful help you will be unable to keep His commandments. Therefore, ask God to help you become a true witness and follower of His. Then by using the faith (believing what God says is true) and grace (divine power to become like Jesus) that He has offered to give you, you will become a true follower of God. 78
Praise God! that you can be saved from eternal death because Jesus has taken your penalty of suffering and death. Praise Him! that you can be saved from sin, from hurting God, because Jesus will give you the desire to love Him and obey His holy law if you ask and believe that He will help you. 79
With God’s powerful help, I invite you to take the following steps to be saved from sin and from eternal death:
1)  Ask God to clearly explain to you how you have broken and are breaking His law.
Many of us are used to breaking the holy law of God, and therefore, we have destroyed or greatly reduced the conscience God has given us. Many times we may no longer understand the difference between right and wrong. Pray sincerely to God to ask Him to clearly reveal your sins so that you will understand your need of forgiveness, and so that you will understand your need of a Savior from sin. Carefully read the holy law and ask God to reveal what you need to change in your own life. 80
“Whosoever committeth sin, transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.”  I John 3:4
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  Romans 3:23
“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”  James 4:17
2)  Be genuinely sorry for your sins and believe that God will save you because Jesus loved you so much that He took your penalty for sin.
God would like ALL of us to be saved – He loves us all. God invites you to come to Him as you are, sinful and weak in moral strength, and receive a new spiritual heart. This new heart will give you the desire to place your complete confidence in God instead of yourself – you will then have a desire to follow God’s path instead of your own way, because you realize that God has perfect wisdom and love. God has promised to help us stop sinning so that we can be at peace with Him and be a good example of a true follower of Jesus. 81
For us to receive the gift that God offers us – the gift of a new life following Jesus and the gift of living forever with Him in His Kingdom – we need to genuinely believe that what God has told us is true (this is called “faith”). God has already given some faith to each one of us. If we need more faith, we can ask God to help increase our faith. God does not expect us to have faith without evidence. He gives us evidence to base our faith on in many ways. For example: 82
  • God will change our heart and give us a new life that is at peace with Him – this change is made through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is one of the most clear and powerful evidences of His existence and power because we all can experience this change no matter where we live and no matter what our level of education.  83
  • We can understand that the complex design of the human body, the stars, plants, and animals were all designed by a very powerful and skillful Creator. God states that He is our Creator and the Creator of all things. If we pray to God and ask Him to reveal Himself to us through His created works, He will begin to reveal Himself to us through various examples in nature. God has provided a variety of spiritual lessons that we can observe in nature.  84
  • The prophecies of the Bible that have predicted past events, including the prophecies mentioned in this presentation of the gospel, have been accurately fulfilled. God caused the Bible to be written by a wide variety of writers. It is His creation and there is no other book like it.  85
  • If you have the privilege of speaking with other true followers of Jesus, you will hear the experiences they have had with God. They will be able to share the reasons for their faith in God and this will help you to have an increase in your faith.  86
  • If you have a Bible to read, then you are blessed to have God’s book of instruction and encouragement. Many followers of Jesus have been persecuted and even killed for owning a Bible or translating it into other languages. When you face a trial or decision, you can ask God to lead you to the best answer through the counsel found in the Bible. We should always treat the Bible with respect and honor – and we should pray before we read from the Bible that God will guide us to clearly understand His word. Some verses of the Bible are more difficult to understand than others. It is wise to base a conclusion on multiple Bible verses instead of just one verse that you may misunderstand.  87
  • God has provided each one of us with promises. These promises are found in the Bible. God is pleased to have us trust in His promises and realize that He will fulfill the promise we are claiming exactly as it reads or better. God fulfills His promises according to His perfect timing. As we unselfishly begin to claim God’s promises in order to bless others and love God more and to provide for the necessities of our family, we will understand God’s power and love for us even more.  88
  • We each have the privilege of speaking to God as a friend – this is called “prayer.” As we speak with God and thank Him for His many blessings and ask Him for guidance and help in our lives, we will have one more evidence to base our faith on.  89
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Hebrews 12:2
“The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  Romans 6:23
“Jesus said '…The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.'”  Mark 1:15
“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”  Proverbs 28:13
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.”  Ezekiel 36:26
“For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him; for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”  Hebrews 11:6
“Come now and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”  Isaiah 1:18
“Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.”  John 8:34
3)  Ask God directly for forgiveness.
As God reveals your sins to you, ask Him for forgiveness and claim the following promises. Jesus will personally present your request for forgiveness to God the Father and will ask that your sins be forgiven and forgotten because He has suffered our penalty for sin. 90
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  I John 1:9
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”  I Timothy 2:5
“He will turn again, He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”  Micah 7:19
After you have received God’s forgiveness, ask for forgiveness from those you have sinned against and with God’s help, do your best to make things right.
“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”  I John 4:7-8
If you have genuinely accepted the above steps by speaking with God about them and applying them to your life, you are now completely forgiven from each and every sin you have ever committed in your life. You have been set free from the penalty of sin because of Jesus’ sacrifice for you – look to the future! You can now be at peace with God and be confident that you will be reunited with Him in Heaven when Jesus comes back to Earth again. You must also promptly forgive those who have sinned against you – since God has forgiven you, He also expects you to be forgiving and merciful to other people. 91
Now that you are forgiven, you have the privilege of being a representative of Jesus by revealing to others the character of Jesus. This will be your new life as a follower of Jesus and it will be lived one day at a time because God has promised to give us strength and power for one day. Focus on today and know that Jesus will never leave you or forsake you. He will station a holy angel next to you to continually be at your side. He will bless you with the presence of the Holy Spirit who will provide you with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Jesus will personally present your prayer requests to God the Father, and you will be treated as His child and He will open to you all the blessings of Heaven because you are part of His family. 92
The change that God has made in your life is wonderful and exciting, and yet there is much more to learn as you are directed along the narrow path by God and His instructions found in the Bible. In the next section you will learn how to walk with God each day. Being forgiven is the wonderful start of your new life in Jesus. Learning how to love God and each person is what you will now be privileged to focus on each day as you continue on the path to Heaven. 93
75 - Return
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Proverbs 13:20

“Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.” Proverbs 22:24-25

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” II Timothy 1:5

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” Ephesians 6:1-3

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 5:12

“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:13-15

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.” Ezekiel 18:20-22

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” I Peter 5:6-11

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,” Ephesians 6:10-19

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:” Deuteronomy 30:19

“He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” Matthew 12:30

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” I Corinthians 10:13
76 - Return

“But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33

“For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)” Romans 2:14-15

“Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” Proverbs 2:3-9

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.” Psalms 19:7

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” James 1:5-6

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:17

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” Matthew 5:43-45

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” I John 3:1-2

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” I John 5:3

“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” Romans 13:8-10

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13

“For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: for he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” Hebrews 11:8-10

I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; that in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: so that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” I Corinthians 1:3-8

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” II Peter 1:19-21

“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” Isaiah 46:9-10

I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. “Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.” James 5:13

“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” Matthew 6:7-13
